Madison Lloyd comes down the home stretch of the 400-meter dash during a track and field meet at Brockport Middle School in Brockport, New York on Thursday, April 18, 2013.
It was kind of surreal watching my niece compete in her first track meet last Thursday. I ran for the same middle school way back in the day when I was her age. I couldn't be more proud watching her out there -- first in the 55-meter hurdles and then later in the 400-meter dash. Keep it up Maddie!

- When I was 23 I got my first job working in newspapers as a page designer. It didn't pay much but that was ok because I got to do what I loved, which was using words and photographs to tell stories of people's lives.
